Frame of Mind
FOM Series presents PIENSA: Blanco/Negro

Inside:  October FOM Series presents PIENSA: Blanco/Negro, a collection of black and white works by the PIENSA: Art Company featuring Dre Lopez, Sammy Lopez, and Robert Chambers LeHeup.

Basic.  To the point.  Fundamental.  No categories.  Several mediums including watercolors, graphite, charcoal, gouache, acrylic, written, and more.  All different, yet tied up by the essence and discipline of the fundamentals of lines, shapes, light, shadow, and spacing.  In black and white, blanco y negro.

PIENSA is an art/design and multimedia studio comprised of two artists and a writer who cater to a wide range of mediums as well as clientele.  They leverage over 30 years of combined experience in the disciplines in fine art, illustration, graphic design, photography, and writing.  Where can you find PIENSA’s work?

  • ILLUSTRATION for books, magazines, sequential and cover work for graphic novels and comics, cd covers, shirt designs, tattoo design, posters
  • GRAPHIC DESIGN for ads both print and web, logo design, company identity, magazine layout, business cards, posters, cd covers, dvd covers
  • FINE ART including painting with several mediums, drawing, mixed media, photography, sculpture, digital media, portraiture
  • WRITING including sequential story telling for graphic novels and comic books as well as screenwriting for TV and the big screen

OutsideOur FOM series would not be complete without the musical backdrop and stylings of Columbia’s own, Ray Howard/Deft Key Studios.  To lend some bright to our night, Chris Carney will be spinning LED poi, and the ladies of Serpentine, Columbia’s newest bellydance company, will showcase their fusion of dance styles.  Columbia Hoops will be jamming with us, too, and spreading their own brand of hula hooping love!

First Thursdays Cruise InFor your outdoor enjoyment, Curran Stone with Cartoys Auto Spa and Mark Plessinger with FOM presents the largest First Thursday “Cruise In” we’ve done yet (think around 100 classic cars)!  Well-received by attendees, neighbors, and car owners/enthusiasts, we’ve decided to add it into the First Thursday line-up for the rest of 2012.

S&S Art Supply
Life=Art: Imperfect Perfection

This October’s edition of First Thursdays is so very special and dear to our hearts. S & S Art Supply is honored to be showing the works of an incredibly talented artist. Carlleena Person, whom we lost earlier this year, was an amazing artist and warm, caring person. She is well known, especially in the Charlotte Arts Scene where she lived. DJ B will be out spinnin’ tunes on the street, so please come out and show your support.

Carlleena’s Artist Statement reads, “My art is about fragmented beauty. I can draw but choose to allow you to create the story you see when looking at the lines and colors I intuitively create. Life is Art and Art is Life and one cannot exist without the other. To dissect life and break it down to its simplest form so that all can understand at first glance is the power of my art.”

Carlleena Person was a passionate artist with an effervescent attitude. Her art is a vivid story of the world thru her eyes. Her art speaks to both adults and kids because of its free use of line and color. Mistakes are welcomed and appreciated because they prove that imperfections can be beautiful. She displayed an eagerness for learning about new artists and supporting local art! She wanted to help keep art in kids’ lives and dreamt of becoming an Art Therapist. Carlleena volunteered with many Charlotte organizations such as Beyond the Arts, The Charlotte Art League and The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.

Carlleena found inspiration in life and nature. She was a painter, designer and muralist. Her largest mural is planted along the side of The Charlotte Art League building. There is also a mural at FABO Café (also in Charlotte) where she enlisted the help of children to use their handprints as the sky.  Carlleena passed away from complications due to a major car accident she was in on May 1, 2012. During her recovery, she was still hard at work prepping for her upcoming solo art shows that included this show at S & S Art Supply! Carlleena believed that Life=Art and Art=Life and that one cannot exist without the other. Carlleena believed she was born to do this…to create art and often would say that she thought she was born with paint in her blood.

If you were ever engaged in conversation with Carlleena, heard her laugh, or shared a hug, I am sure you will never forget her either. Though her life was short, it was full of love, laughs and Art! Her spirit will forever be powerful. LIFE=ART™  Carlleena Person was born in New Jersey and spent her teenage years in North Carolina. Her views of the world were influenced by both the north and the south. She is an alumni of NC State University in which she obtained her BA in Liberal Arts.

“You can’t live off of potential for the rest of your life, so get up, get out, and go get you something.”

In the near future, we will have prints and T-Shirts available for sale. Please check out her Facebook fan page for updates: Savnac Mural Designs art of Carlleena Person.

Tapp’s Art Center
Suzy Scarborough

Our October featured artist is Suzy Scarborough. Expect huge beautiful portraits, oils on canvas and collages. The artist describes her upcoming show and work on her website as such:

“I am currently working on three distinct bodies of work: collage abstracts, gold leaf geometrics, and figures. Although they differ in appearance and technique, they are related in thematic content: “inner reality” as opposed to “outer reality;” the natural/organic as opposed to mathematical/abstract; material as opposed to conceptual/symbolic.”

We also have four bands playing in the Fountain Room between 7:30 and 10pm:

  • “Late Nights” Indie Rock from USC
  • Roomdance-Columbia, SC electronic pioneer from the Post Echo Collective and Space Idea Tapes
  • Kevin Greenspon-from Los Angeles, CA experimental music master who runs the label Bridgetown Records
  • Elvis Depressedly-Drone music from Columbia, SC staple Mat Cothran who also writes and records as Coma Cinema

Lauren Maurer

For October’s First Thursday on Main Street, Wine Down on Main presents Lauren Maurer as the featured artist.

She’ll be bringing her trademark vintage dress paintings, as well as a new line of Argentine tango paintings, and hand painted and etched Mr. B’s wine bottle glasses.

A self taught artist, Lauren has shown in the Columbia area at many popular art events, including First Thursday, Artista Vista, Vista Lights, City Art, Art with a Heart, Color the Arts, and many more. Her art is displayed in homes and businesses here in Columbia as well as across America and internationally.

The Museum Shop: Columbia Museum of Art

Don’t miss The Museum Shop’s featured sale for October First Thursday: 50%-off-of-selected-items sale!  We’ll be out on the sidewalk with these treasures. See you there.  We will be out from 4:00-8:30 pm.

Mast General

Come on in!  We’ve got Chris Compton and the Ruby Brunettes playing a form of music loosely called Baroque folk-pop. The absence of any rhythm section (no bass or drums) allows for a certain ambient quality in the music that makes it at once unique and difficult to define. Think Burt Bacharach meets Tom Waits meets David Gray.  You’ll want to experience this.

The Nickelodeon

The Nickelodeon Theatre, South Carolina’s only non-profit art house film theater, which has moved to its renovated, larger, state-of-the-art space at 1607 Main Street will celebrate its first month in the theater’s new home by hosting a Nick Parade on Main Street, as part of First Thursdays on Main and in conjunction with Main Street Merchants.

“The move has been a long time coming, and to celebrate this major step for the theater as an arts organization, we decided a monumental parade with a diverse group of participants from all over Columbia would be an entertaining way to highlight the unique groups and arts organizations in our city,” said Andy Smith, executive director of the Nickelodeon Theatre. “We’re planning for this event to be a little quirky, and a lot of fun. It’s a one-time event to celebrate the first month in our new home.”

WHEN: Thursday, October 4, 7 p.m.

WHERE: Main Street route…start at Main and Lady streets, and continue down to the 1600 block where music, and drinks from the Whig will be available…Lady and Blanding Streets will be closed to non-parade traffic from 6:30 – 8 p.m.

NICK PARADE PARTICIPANTS: Eau Claire High School Marching Band, Columbia Museum of Art, Columbia City Ballet, Double Dutch Forces, Trustus Theatre, Next Door Drummers, Tapp’s Arts Center, Hoop Hounds, Kudzu Queens, Tom Halle and Krewe de Columbi-Ya-Ya and much more… like classic cars, marching bands, floats, queens (of all sorts), local organizations, lots of the Main Street Merchants, well as the Nick Staff!

MORE: The Nickelodeon encourages parade attendees to also check out the other galleries and happenings on Main Street as part of First Thursdays on Main. The Nick will also host a block party following the parade in front of the Nickelodeon Theatre in the 1600 block of Main Street.
